After college

College is suppose to be a time when you find yourself and a time where you experience new things, but what happens after college? I know you get a job and such but how as a 19 year old am I suppose to know what I want to be in life? I feel like we are being thrust into a job that we might not want.

College is about discovery and you definitely experience new things and people. I found myself looking into the business school as many who enter SMU do. Entering the business school almost promises a good career and money, but what if you get stuck in a job that you hate? I feel a lot of pressure to pursue a career that might not be for me.

If the system could be changed I think I would allow some time for discovery before entering college. I think kids should have the opportunity to have a year to spend time doing different jobs so that they can find what they really want to do. They should setup programs that allow kids to follow around people in different jobs to get a taste for them. It would be really unfortunate to find yourself with a graduate degree in a field you don't like with a job that you don't like.

Nobody is stopping you from going out and experiencing the workplace. I with the fact that not everybody knows what they want to do however should have some basic idea of what subjects interest them and go from there. Good luck with your future plans.

Maybe there are some internships you could apply for. They don't pay well or at all, but you can perhaps eliminate what you're definitely not passionate about. You might also find an interesting avenue through a school that fuels your individual interests. Maybe the typical business school is not for you, but you may find an unusual and fulfilling line of work from your connections made in the school...

There are so many different fields you can go into with a business degree. but the most important thing to remember is to "find a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life". Good luk with your future plans.

As college students we all feel this type of pressure one time or another. I was very unsure of what I wanted to major in a few months before entering college. After a lot of time of soul searching I finally came to the conclusion thatI would major in business. Like most other college students, I also worry about what job I will have in the future. Graduating from a good school such as SMU will most likely guarantee a good job, one that has promotions and a good future. My suggestion to you is to enjoy the present and don't worry too much about that yet!
